Yelena Gluzman conceives and directs theatrical events, recently showing School for Salomés at the Collapsable Hole in NYC (2011), Steal Life #1 (2009) and The Emancipated Spectator (2010) at Superdeluxe in Tokyo. She is interested in novel uses of repetition, and is currently developing a production of The Bacchae performed entirely by 3 – 6 year old children. An editor at Ugly Duckling Presse, she leads the Paperless Books Department (PBD), which publishes texts that call into question the inviolable body and distribution of the book. In 2010, her own paperless book "Dear Diary" was briefly on display at Artbooks, the bookshop at PS1 Museum. With Matvei Yankelevich, she is also co-editor of the Emergency series, annual books on performance including PLAYSCRIPTS, a series of radical performance texts; INDEX, an annual document of performances made in the previous year; and ANALYSIS, a forthcoming series of theoretical monographs on performance. She teaches at the University of Tokyo and the experimental art school Yotsuya Art Studium. She moonlights as an art consultant ("It's pro bono, but it ain't free"), making her problem-solving process available to artists in need of good ideas. She divides her time between New York and Tokyo, and enjoys making performance events in response to commissions, challenges, or dares.
